The extension of municipal boundaries in Alabama is accomplished through a process known as “annexation”. The area to be considered for annexation must be contiguous to the corporate limits of the municipality, the area may not be within the corporate limits or police jurisdiction of another municipality, and must be rezoned to the requested zoning category by the Planning Board. When property is annexed into a municipality it enjoys all the services of that municipality. All annexations must be approved by the U.S. Department of Justice pursuant to the Voting Rights Act before being implemented.
The Building Inspection Department will assist you in petitioning the City Council to annex your property into the City of Guntersville. For more information contact the department at (256) 571-7564.
